Don't panic if your ball gets stuck! New golf rules allow you to take relief from an embedded ball anywhere in the general area.
According to the rules of golf, you are entitled to free relief from an embedded ball in any area except bunkers or hazards.
Prior to 2019, free relief from an embedded ball was limited to fairways and closely mown areas. However, the 2019 Rules of Golf expanded the relief options for embedded balls to include the entire general area, excluding tee boxes, bunkers, hazards, and greens. Of course, when a ball becomes embedded on the green, players are still allowed to lift, clean, and place it.
First, you need to check if your ball is actually embedded. A portion of the ball should be below the surface of the ground.
Next, choose a spot just in front of where the ball was embedded. You should use a tee to mark that spot. From there, drop your ball within one club-length, without getting closer to the hole.
However, there are exceptions to the embedded ball rule. You are not entitled to free relief if your ball is embedded in casual water in the general area adjacent to the fairway. Additionally, you cannot take free relief from an embedded ball in a casual water hazard. For instance, if your ball is embedded deep in a bush, you would have to take an unplayable lie and incur a one-stroke penalty.
