How many Wedge sticks should I carry in my golf bag?

Choosing the number of wedges carried in golf bags is a common question that many golfers ask to coaches and fittings experts. It is also an important question because each golfer can only carry a maximum of 14 strokes in his pocket, and choosing which bat to carry can greatly affect performance on the field.

1. Overall evaluation of your game

Before deciding how many wedges to carry, you should evaluate your entire game. Ask yourself: What are my strengths? What sticks do I usually use? Would I be willing to take a few more sticks to add the wedge? For example, many golfers have to choose between reducing a wedge to add a fairway wood, or vice versa, depending on their need for long-distance or close-range shots.

2. Loftness of wedge sticks

Wedge sticks usually have a loft of 43° to 64°. A standard set of iron rods is usually accompanied by a pitch wedge (PW) with a loft range of 43° to 50°. Then, you can select additional gap wedges (50°-54°), sand wedges (54°-58°), and lob wedges (58°-64°) to complete your set. Choosing the proper loft helps you control the distance better when hitting the green.

3. 2-stick wedge system

Some golfers use the "clock face" method to control the distance when hitting a wedge. This method is based on the imaginary clock face hand position to adjust the hitting distance. If you use this system, you can just carry two wedge sticks: one pitch wedge about 48° and one sand wedge about 56°. This helps to make a reasonable distance between the clubs and leaves room for a fairway wood or hybrid in the pocket.

4. 3-stick wedge system

This is the most popular option for amateur golfers. This system typically consists of a 46° pitch wedge, a 52° gap wedge, and a 58° lob wedge. This arrangement allows you to have enough sticks to handle near-green hits that still have room to carry two fairway wood or hybrid bats.

5. Wedge 4-stick system

For batters farther away, the four-stroke wedge system may be the best option. If you regularly hit more than 280 yards from tee, having multiple wedge choices will make it easier to hit a full green. The system can include 46° pitch wedge, 50° gap wedge, 54° sand wedge, and 58° lob wedge, which helps you maintain a constant gap between hits.

6. Should I wear a 60 degree wedge?

The 60° wedge stick has a high loft, which is often used to handle short situations near green, especially when it is necessary to overcome the bunker. However, the use of this stick requires high technique, and can easily make mistakes if not confident enough. If you are a player with a medium to high hand, you should consider using a lower loft bat for short shots, but if your court has many small greens protected by a bunker, the 60° wedge bat can be a useful choice - as long as you practice enough with it.

The determination of the number of wedges carried in a golf bag depends on the style of each golfer. It is important that you carefully evaluate your game to make the most appropriate choice, which improves performance on the field.
