What is the standard golf hole diameter according to USGA and R&A?

1. What is the size of the golf hole?

According to regulations, the diameter of the Golf hole must be 4.25 inches (10,795 cm). The size was agreed upon by the world's two largest golf governing bodies, the American Golf Association (USGA) and the Royal & Ansient (R&A).  

Golf holes must be cut at least 4 inches deep, but there is no limit to maximum depth.   For comparison, the diameter of a golf ball is 1.68 inches.

2. History of the 4.25-inch Golf Hole

In 1891, the R&A Golf Association officially adopted a standard for golf hole size of 4.25 inches. At that time, R&A was the only governing body of golf, before the American Golf Association (USGA) was born in 1984 and jointly managed the sport.  

So why is 4.25 inches standard?  

The first Golf Hole Cutter, currently on display at the Golf Course in Scotland, was created in 1829 at the Royal Musselburgh Golf Course. The exact reason for the 4.25-inch size is unclear, but it is possible that the instrument was built based on the size of a drain available at the golf course.  

This size gradually became the norm that golfers were used to, leading R&A to decide to formalize it.  

When the USGA was born, the organization also adopted this size as the official standard for golf holes.

3. Should Golf Holes Be Made Larger?

There have been serious experiments with golf holes 8 inches in diameter, or even 15 inches. However, the possibility that USGA will allow bigger holes seems unlikely.   Throughout the history of golf, there have been many discussions about increasing the size of golf holes. One of the strongest supporters of the idea is Ben Hogan - Golfer who has the best ball control of all time.  

The small size of the current golf hole makes putting on Green extremely important. If the hole size is increased, players will put more emphasis on approach shots (Approach Shot) and hits around the Green area, which will benefit players like Hogan. In addition, the larger hole will also help reduce the playing time by shortening Putt time.
