Two 5-Irons, Two Drivers, Four Putters, and Other Fascinating Clubs in Phil Mickelson's Bag

Phil Mickelson has revealed some highly unique club choices as he showcased the bag setup he'll be using in 2025.

One of Phil Mickelson's off-course goals for 2025 is to rival Bryson DeChambeau as the king of golf on YouTube. Alongside a series of videos with online star Grant Horvat, he's also started producing his own special video content.

And a deep dive into Mickelson's bag is certainly fascinating, from the changes he's made to his irons and wedges, the diverse options for different playing conditions, to the sheer number of clubs he carries. Mickelson has four putters, two drivers, two 5-irons, and even two different golf ball models, all ready for use by one of golf's most analytical thinkers, especially when it comes to equipment.

Here are some highlights from Mickelson's bag:

Special "Japan Only" Irons

Mickelson is no longer a Callaway brand ambassador, but the majority of his clubs still come from the brand—including a set of irons he specially commissioned.

"The irons I've used for the last 10 years were primarily the 2013 X Forged set that I won the British Open with," Mickelson shared. "I saw a set that looked amazing and guess what? They are amazing! Callaway was great to make that set, they're X Forged 'Japan Only' irons, they took the right-handed data, put it in the computer, and had the machine cut them—it's quite expensive to do."

Heavily Milled Clubs

Mickelson isn't someone who just puts off-the-rack clubs in his bag; all his wedges and irons have been custom-milled by grinding down the heel and toe to suit his preferences.

We've seen this often with wedges, where the sole and leading edge are ground to fit a player's preference, but Mickelson has done this with his irons, as he's cut off significant portions of the heel and toe of all his irons. He says the purpose is to achieve the turf interaction he prefers, offering more versatility when hitting from fairway bunkers and various lies.

Backup 5-Iron for The Masters

Interestingly, Mickelson carries a backup 5-iron in his bag, and this particular one seems to be primarily for The Masters—a Callaway Rogue.

"This is a faster face, faster material, the ball goes faster and flies higher. So, I had to add a little bit of loft to get it to 215 yards," Mickelson explained. "I have to strengthen my (X Forged) 5-iron to get it to 215 yards, and this (Rogue) will fly a little higher. So, when I have to play courses like Augusta and have to hit a lot of 5-irons into greens, I want the ball to fly soft, so I'll use the Rogue."

An Old Hybrid

Mickelson is experimenting with all sorts of the latest fairway wood technology, but he still carries an old Ping Anser hybrid that lacks any new tech.

"This is the Ping Anser hybrid that I used in 2013 to win the British Open and it's still with me," Mickelson shared. "It doesn't have any of the fast technology, which is why I like it because it hits like an iron. The loft doesn't matter because all I want is to get a certain number, and this can go over 230 yards."

Two Drivers

We've frequently seen Mickelson take different approaches off the tee, from using a mini-driver to only using a 3-wood, or just stepping up and "hitting bombs" as he says.

Now, he has two drivers in his bag and can't decide which one to choose!

"I have two drivers this year – I've been using the new Ping G440 and the Callaway Elyte, I hit them both pretty straight," Mickelson shared. "I'm really torn between both of these drivers because I like them both."

Four Putters for Every Situation

"I have four putters and I'm going to use all of them," Mickelson stated. He has two Odyssey Blade putters that we typically see him play in tournaments, with one featuring a specially milled face for use in wet weather.

But Mickelson also has two LAB Mezz Max putters, one he used in his YouTube series with Horvat and a heavier one for use on slow greens.

Mickelson will have to make some crucial decisions to narrow down his enormous club selection to just 14 clubs, but in his characteristic laid-back style, he's not overly concerned because "all those clubs are awesome."
